The process of Electric heating is the conversion of electrical energy into heat energy. Electric central heating is nothing but generating heat through the use of electricity. Typical applications include space heating, water heating, or other industrial processes. This form of heating is more commonly referred to as “Electric Wet Central Heating” and has gained popularity as people shifted away from the less efficient traditional storage heating systems.

Working Principle

It is the same as a conventional central heating system. Still, it differs in the sense that it uses an electric boiler or a radiator that uses electricity rather than fuel oil or gas. These electric heaters convert power into heat using metals as heating elements.   1. These are much cheaper to install than gas central heating systems as they don’t require pipework or a flue. 
  2. Electricity based central heating systems are mess-free and easy to maintain as they require little maintenance and need not be serviced annually.
  3. Electric heating products are also suitable for DIY installation as they can be screwed to the wall and plugged into a regular 13amp socket. 
  4. With the use of electricity and the absence of internal combustion elements, there’s no risk of carbon monoxide emission.
  5. There is minimal heat loss with storage heaters, as there is no water traveling through pipes.
  6. A traditional central heating system does not possess individual control, whereas electric heaters work independently.
  7. Electricity is readily available and can be procured more efficiently in comparison to the gas.
  8. There are no hassles about maintaining supply levels of oil or gas fuels.
Cons
  1. Electricity prices are much higher than gas prices per unit of energy. So you might get cheaper heating but running these appliances during the day could be quite expensive. 
  2. Producing electricity consumes a lot of energy in the form of fossil fuels.
  3. Storage heaters do not provide instant heating. They need to be switched on a few hours before; therefore, in case you forget to turn on the switch, you might have to spend time in the cold.
  4. Electric heating systems have a lower capacity than gas or oil systems. Therefore meeting enormous heating demands could be a difficult task.

Large offices mostly prefer electric Central Heating and less preferred in houses as it is quite expensive.
